Visa Waiver Program Eligibility and Requirements

The Department of Homeland Security operates the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) to pre-screen travelers intending to enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. This system is not applicable to individuals from non-Visa Waiver countries, who must obtain a visitor visa in advance.

Prospective travelers are advised to register online as early as possible, with no need for a confirmed travel ticket or hotel reservation. Upon completing the ESTA registration, applicants receive an immediate response regarding their eligibility to travel to the United States. A Travel Authorization obtained through ESTA is typically valid for two years, unless the associated passport expires sooner.

Since January 12, 2009, it has been mandatory for all travelers using the Visa Waiver Program to register through ESTA before traveling to the United States by air or sea. Failure to have an approved Travel Authorization will result in denial of boarding on any U.S.-bound airplanes or sea vessels.

Travelers from Visa Waiver countries must possess either a machine-readable passport or an e-passport, depending on their nationality. Those with non-machine-readable passports from Visa Waiver countries are required to apply for a visitor visa.

Notably, not all citizens of Visa Waiver countries are automatically eligible to enter the United States without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program.
